2001 Durango stalls at idle

by awiguru75 on Sep 24 2017, 4:47 PM

G'Day all

I has a 2001 Durango v8. 280k that has a rough idle and will occasionally stall when it stops at a light or stop sign. Recently replaced plugs (Champion) and wires

thoughts?!

thanks

I WOULD GUESS VACUUM LEAK OR POSSIBLY HORRIBLY DIRTY THROTTLE BODY AS A START.

sounds like it needs a good tune up!

or a vacum leak or gasket on the bottom of the intake

check your fuel filter, remove the return gas line and crank vehicle if gas comes out then your getting fuel through the motor and to return line

Which engine does your Durango have 5.9L or 4.7L? I didn't see it stated.  The older Magnum (5.2L & 5.9L) engines had the aluminum intake with the steel plate on the bottom of it that would leak and cause the vacuum leak into the crankcase which usually caused oil consumption and other drivability problems. If you have the 5.9L then I usually seen dirty throttle bodies cause the idle problem. I would clean the throttle plate and idle air control valve passage then most of the time those engines would idle correctly.  If you have a 4.7L then I have seen throttle position sensors fail and would cause about the same problem.  Hope that helps.  Daniel

I agree with the possibility of the plate under the intake leaking. The easiest way to test for that is to remove the dipstick & using a vacuum gauge see if the crankcase is pulled into a vacuum. If it is, suspect that plate is bad. Also we see some valve problems that typically show up at lower rpm. A running compression test will usually find bad valves. If it acts up consistently, I would check that next. Also Check spark plug gap when performing compression test. Too tight of a gap can cause intermittent misfires.

Check fuel trim at idle. The 4.7 has a gasket on the bottom of the intake that leaks and can cause oil consumption, rough idle and stalling.
