47RE Trans Over temp light

by jeffreyd1 on Aug 11 2017, 3:56 PM

'03 Ram 2500 w/ a 5.9L & 47RE transmission. Getting an over temp light on the dash. Have a transmission temp gauge installed & not overheating. Also shot the transmission w/non-contact thermometer & verified that temp gauge is accurate. Scan tool is reading over 300 degrees on trans temp. Pillar gauge & non-contact thermometer are reading 185 ish degrees. The over temp light is coming on consistently between 180-185 degrees. Replaced the transmission temperature sensor. Same thing. Any ideas?

Figured it out. Determined that it is directly related to transmission temp & therefore not likely an external problem. Took a guess & replaced internal transmission harness(part of solenoid assembly). It plugs into transmission temperature sensor. Although no visible damage or problems, it is all good now. Was a bad internal harness.

I would verify where the actual sensor is getting its ready from and verifying that the location is not actually overtemp .  seen cooler flow issues when towing causing this light and then limp mode

I have read there is a ground behind the drivers wheel well; consisting of about six grounds; that come loose and corrode. I have read they cause multiple issues including transmission problems and torque converter clutch surging. Hope this helps!

check resistance on the circuit and make sure its not open somewhere.  Also the chance that its a faulty sensor but i would print out a diagram and look at the wiring first.
