Blown fuse; No start.

by shadetreetech on Oct 02 2017, 7:45 PM

Last week we had a 2006 Pontiac Torrent towed in to the shop. Stalled no start. No fuel pressure. I quickly found a blown fuse. Replaced the fuse expecting to blow right away. No such luck. Starts and runs fine. Next we took fuel pump patterns and amp draw. The pattern seemed O.K. And amp draw was 5.5 to 6.5 amps. No where near blowing the ten amp fuse. After researching the diagrams; I found only the fuel pump is on this fuse. I inspected the wiring as much as possible. Nothing. We let it run for several hours with the scope on it; There was no change in pattern. Have you run into one of these? Thanks for any help

SOUNDS LIKE THE PUMP IS HEATING UP AND CAUSING THE AMP DRAW TO EXCEED THE FUSE CAPACITY. CURRENT RAMP THE WIRE AND RUN UNTIL FAILURE OF FUSE, NOTE AMP DRAW.

I would watch the initial pump engagement & see how many amps it pulls. Check it again on a hot restart. Jar the bottom of the tank & make sure the fuel pump internal bushings aren't worn & causing intermittent binding especially on bumps. Good luck.

Maybe it was a cheap fuse, aka Harbor Freight.  If it blows again, it would either have to be a bad fuel pump or the wiring going to the fuel pump.

Maybe the old fuse was rated lower than 10 amps? or someone else put other stuff on the same fuse that wasn't on the diagram?
