Fuel Volume

When tackling a lean driveability issue, one must focus on fuel volume. Yes, you must have proper fuel pressure, but without having the proper fuel volume, the lean problem will still exist. Volume is a quantity, whereas pressure is a force. Each cylinder requires a specific volume (quantity) of fuel to operate properly. So when testing a fuel pump for a lean driveability issue, one must measure the fuel volume as well as pressure. A general fuel volume spec is one pint of fuel flow in one minute. Be sure to check manufacturers specs on your specific vehicle.
If you are experiencing a lean misfire on a cylinder caused by a restricted injector, you can do an injector balance test on the vehicle to pinpoint the faulty injector or injectors. Start by hooking up your fuel pressure gauge to the injector rail. Next cycle the ignition key on. Next activate each injector one at a time either with your scan tool or a fuel injection pulse tester tool ( such as an OTC3398). Observe and record the pressure drop on each injector. The one or ones with the least amount of fuel pressure drop are your culprits.
Another method to test injector fuel volume would be to remove all of the injectors from the vehicle and perform a fuel volume test on a flow bench. One may do this test by connecting each injector individually to your fuel injector cleaning canister for fuel supply and hooking up the fuel injector pulse tool and activate each injector spraying the fuel into a graduated test tube and record the volume of fuel from each injector. The fuel volume of the injectors should be equal. Injectors with less fuel volume are restricted.
