Power Steering Pump Bleeding
by 1986chevyman on Dec 31 2018, 9:36 PMElite Tech
Ever replace a P/S pump only to have the P/S system full of air. A trick I use to remove that stubborn air is too pull a vacuum on the P/S pump reservoir. I fill the pump with P/S fluid leaving about 1" from the top. I next clean the top lip of the reservoir open with a rag and Brakleen to get any oil off it. Next I cover the opening with duct tape ( some pumps mat take 2 pieces side by side) I overlap the duct tape down the side of the reservoir. I next put a rubber band around the duct tape to help secure it to the pump. Next I punch a small hole in the duct tape with an ice pick. Next I take my syphon blow gun and attach the syphon hose with a taper plastic tip into the small hole in the duct tape. Next I squeeze the trigger on the blow gun and it pulls a vacuum on the syphon hose thus pulling a vacuum on the P/S pump reservoir. Apply the vacuum for approxiamately 1 minute. Next check for air bubbles coming up in the reservoir and fluid level going down. Top off the reservoir and repeat previous step until no more air bubbles are coming up.
